The Thread of History
The Thread of History Any society can be compared to a living organism that gets born, grows and changes according to the time, environment and processes that go on internally. Any group of people has their own beliefs and regulations which are backed up by history, traditions and culture.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Thread of History specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In any society there are people who get their opinion widely known and they are sometimes called visionaries. For the past twenty years, society has experienced many rapid changes, and thinkers and writers often offered their opinions, as to what is going on under the surface and where the present world is going to be in the future. All societies have intricate traditions and structures with work and leisure time. One of the oldest activities that people are engaged in is sports or any kind of physical games. Steve Craig, in his book titled ââ¬Å"Sports and Games of the Ancientsâ⬠looks at how societies view games and how they are comprehended personally and socially. One of the important points is that each society has a form of games that are played publicly, for peopleââ¬â¢s entertainment. Socially, it says several things, as the population is very multifaceted. Primarily, it is that people need a form of entertainment that can be watched live. People are interested in seeing other fellow human beings in action and the key feature of the sport which is its unpredictability makes the viewing even more exciting and desired. The unique nature of games is very original because it cannot be fully predicted and people are drawn to that (Craig 1). Comparing to the television, where people are playing out formed scripts, games are much different. Even though previously, in the early days, there were games and the need for them, peopleââ¬â¢s interest and commercialization have grown immensely at the onset of television and other m ass media. This led to people wanting more and expecting sights that were non-existent before. It begs a question of why do people really need entertainment and what would happen without it. It is a part of human soul and emotional existence, as without it, people would have work and duties that are a part of the routine and not feelings. A close connection to the pleasures of life is explored by Deborah Blum in her book ââ¬Å"Love at Goon Park: Harry Harlow and the Science of Affectionâ⬠. Just as people need mass and public entertainment, they need affection and love. This is one of the starting points in life and it very much sets up the rest of a personââ¬â¢s development. It is interesting that the way a person will feel about themselves, others, their ability to be in public places, feel confidence and connection to people; all these things get influenced by how the infant and child are treated.Advertising Looking for research paper on social sciences? The experiments proved that baby monkey sometimes needed affection and ââ¬Å"warmthâ⬠of their mother more than food. This and other experiments, as well as the views of Deborah Blum reiterate the fact that people need love and any society must have healthy and loving individuals for the whole nation or country to prosper (Blum 15). In a work titled ââ¬Å"The Pyrotechnic Insanitarium: American Culture on the Brinkâ⬠, Mark Dery describes a new age of life and society. The twenty first century has brought many changes and the focus can be seen on the rapid development of entertainment but also, on the negatives and short backs of society. The conspiracy theory is mentioned, and people start to realize that in the fast moving world there are things that could be unseen and under the surface. It is somewhat re bated by saying that in reality, there are no conspiracies and the politics are very much openly viewed but it does not seem convincing. The entertainment and pleasures of people are going hand in hand with the horrors that human mind offers. With the increasing crime rates and technological advancement, people are receiving more information and problems to deal with. The heights of human brain power are allowing predicting that the future will bring even more challenges and people will face something that has never been seen before (Dery 30). It is very true that human mind is still a mystery and it is quite difficult to see what people are capable of. Alfred Lubrano discuses another part of the changing world in a book titled ââ¬Å"Limbo: Blue-Collar Roots, White-Collar Dreamsâ⬠. He especially points to the division between people socially and personally. For as long as there has been humanity, people have had different duties according to own views but also to the world aro und them. The division between the working and the middle class is what Alfred Lubrano talks about. He describes the qualities of people who are born to be a part of the middle class and that there is no way of becoming anything else. It touches upon the moral issue of a person desiring what they want to do in their life but at the same time, creating opportunities to achieve whatever it is they strive to reach. Education is mentioned as an important part of the process in becoming successful and this reflects in the scope of bigger things in society. This is becoming very true in any part of the world, as the evolution of technologies and workforce is delving into a different sphere, uncommon to the previous century. The world is becoming business oriented and there are many individuals who consider it their lifeââ¬â¢s calling to become a part of it (Lubrano 10).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Thread of History specifically for you for o nly $16.05 $11/page Learn More Vivian Sobchack takes a look at the modern society and examines the future in the work titled ââ¬Å"Carnal Thoughts: Embodiment and Moving Image Cultureâ⬠. The world is acquiring so many angles and perspectives that it is becoming harder to keep track of. She refers to ââ¬Å"Hansel and Gretelâ⬠in relation to the fact that without the ââ¬Å"breadcrumbsâ⬠people might become lost (Sobchack 13). This representation is meant to show that people need guidance. The future world has many mysteries and people need organization and each otherââ¬â¢s help to find the way. The world is becoming divided into spaces that are foreign and sometimes, unequal. Even though this is an age of knowledge and peopleââ¬â¢s rights, there is still much to learn, especially in the relationship between people and different groups. Vivian Sobchack qualifies people as being lost in the world, not knowing what to do and how to adjust to the fa st moving pace. There starts to evolve a sort of separation between the world and the masses, and an individual is not aware of what is expected of them regarding themselves and society. People start to create false realities and whatever they think is right, eventually becomes empty space and people are forced to re-think their goals and dreams. Another look at the modern world and the way it is being run is taken by Linda Seger in a book ââ¬Å"Jesus Rode a Donkey: Why Republicans Dont Have the Corner on Christâ⬠. The author compares peopleââ¬â¢s religious beliefs to the political system and what is expects and required of people (Seger 7). Many are faced with sacrifices that have to be made for the system to prosper. But there is also a different side of the coin, where others get rich at the expense of people who are fulfilling their duty to be a good citizen. Linda Seger reinforces that in order for people to go into the future, they must be understanding and kind to ea ch other. The simplicity of their actions and straightforward manner will create best conditions of life for all human beings. The new age has given people power to vote for their leaders and enjoy the rights and freedoms that are naturally given but is unclear what these freedoms can sometimes bring. All the writers and thinkers have a very common theme that centers on people which is their needs and the evolving society. People want to be happy and keep finding ways of how to enjoy the life. Even though the majority bases their existence on goodness, there are those who want to use the population and gain more than is needed. This leads to an important question of the changing world and the expectancies that people have towards it. It must be just and equal to all and this should be the motto of the future. Blum, Deborah. The Anatomy of a Winning Resume
The Anatomy of a Winning Resume A few weeks ago one of my writers sent me a link to an infographic by www.TopCounselingSchools.org entitled The Anatomy of a Great Resume. The similarities between dating and job search are often highlighted by job seekers, and this infographic is rather explicit in milking the similarities, beginning with the question, ââ¬Å"Does your resume get hit on all the time?â⬠Source: Top Counseling Schools It may be true that the competition for great talent is at least as fierce as the competition for a great romantic partner, and the above infographic provides some interesting statistics and advice. Some of it is rather surprising, and I thought I would pass it along. Iââ¬â¢ve picked just a few salient points; take a look at the infographic for the full report! 1. 77% of HR Managers say they are looking for relevant experience. 48% say specific accomplishments. 41% say whether or not the resume was customized to the open position. Really? I wonder how the HR Managers define ââ¬Å"relevant experienceâ⬠ââ¬â It seems like a no-brainer that if a hiring manager receives two resumes for a position, both of which contain the relevant background but only one of which contains quantifiable achievements, the person who listed quantifiable achievements will be the more attractive candidate. Iââ¬â¢m not surprised to see the preference for customized resumesââ¬âcustomization shows that you are willing to go the extra mile. If you do it in the resume, you will do it in the workplace. I believe a winning resume will do all three things: state relevant experience, highlight specific accomplishments, AND be customized to the position. Do it all and you will have the best chance of getting an interview. 2. Keywords: 56% say problem solving is a keyword they look for and 40% say oral/written communication. Really?! These are overused buzzwords; so probably an equal number of HR Managers will say NOT to use these words! To be safe, if you choose to use these buzzwords, tie them to specific problems solved and specific communication skills and you will be ahead of the game. Other top keywords: Leadership (44%), Team building (33%) and Performance and productivity improvement (31%). Again, ALWAYS include specific achievements to support the keywords. 3. Write a Summary! Yes HR Managers like seeing a summary that conveys your unique value. Emphasis on unique. If you sound like everyone else, the summary will not help. The infographic recommends that you tell employees ââ¬Å"who you areâ⬠and that you talk about your ââ¬Å"skills and qualifications.â⬠Watch out for dangerous pitfalls! In saying who you are, you must include specifics about your background that other candidates donââ¬â¢t have. List names of companies or sizes of budgets. Or write about your unique passion or style. In enumerating your skills and qualifications, donââ¬â¢t make them generic. Tie all your skills to an accomplishment or capacity. That way you can truly grab attention in the summary and get the HR Manager to read more. 4. Donââ¬â¢t use an Objective. Objective statements are focused on what you want rather than what the company wants. Iââ¬â¢ve been surprised to hear some support for Objective statements in resumes lately. I donââ¬â¢t buy it. I think the people advocating for Objective statements are behind the times and in the minority. Use your Summary to state what you have to contribute to an organization. Use a title at the top of the resume (generally under your name and contact information) to state what position you are seeking. 5. Proofread! Spelling and grammatical errors are a deal-killer. These could be deal-killers in the dating scene too! Although the cardinal rule of resume writing is ââ¬Å"There are no rules,â⬠itââ¬â¢s always useful to hear what hiring managers are saying. Still, surveys are inherently faulty since people often misjudge their own actions and opinions. The Anatomy of a Great Resume infographic provides food for thought, so take it as such. And remember, no two people will have the same opinion about your resume, so get the best advice you can get and Be Yourself, i.e. write a resume that expresses who you areand that you are proud to send to your connections and prospective employers.

Information Technology and Computing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Information Technology and Computing - Essay Example The researcher discusses the opinion in which the information technology (IT) is associated with a clean and safe environment. But states that this is far from the truth. Considering its background processingââ¬â¢s in the manufacture field it seems, the tidiness seen in the infrastructures of IT is only peripheral. The manufacture of hardware involves the use of thousands of materials. Many of these materials are highly toxic, for example Lithium - that is a major component in laptops, CPUs and mobile phones. With mobile telephony zooming off, we can soon see millions of handsets joining the scrap heap every year in the near future. To this pile, adding lakhs of CRT monitors every year, especially when LCD monitors start coming down in price. It is stated in the essay that Government should come up with legislation compelling vendors to initiate a take back and successful recycle mechanism; else the dream could well end up in an ecological nightmare. The failure to pass crucial le gislation in many countries has allowed the computer industry to resist addressing many criticisms, such as the amount of hazardous material used to make their products and the ever-growing pile of waste that results from the dynamic pace of innovation in the Information Technology (IT) industry. As a result, the researcher mentiones that double standards may exist between countries. MNC will start shipping machines free of the toxic chemicals, in which the law is strict and will ship machines with toxic substances, where law is flexible.

Literary Criticism Essay on the novel Atonement by Ian McEwan
Literary Criticism on the novel Atonement by Ian McEwan - Essay Example This essay discusses that from a formalistic theory of literature vantage point, the way in which McEwan uses grammar and syntax is developed to create a definitive undertone for the story and characters. As Briony is introduced, the writing has a tempo that is a bit staccato. One can feel her personality through the overuse of adjectives and descriptivism in order to emit the precocious, dramatic personality of a thirteen-year-old girl embroiled in the complexity of experiences that she was not yet able to process. ââ¬Å"Briony was hard to know it then, but this was the project's highest point of fulfillment. Nothing came near it for satisfaction, all else was dreams and frustration.â⬠In conclusion, as the story is told, the use of words creates the proper moods and enhances the characterizations. As the consequences of actions are played through, the dilemma of the writer is characterized. ââ¬Å"The problem these fifty-nine years has been this: how can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is also God?â⬠As the reader becomes involved and inserts his or her own experiences into the consequences of the novel, nuances of viewpoint change the way in which the reader will respond. As well, the universal symbolism that utilizes helps to clearly define the journey that is undertaken. As the different literary theories are examined in context, the novel, Atonement, by Ian McEwan becomes a tapestry of emotional content that touches on universal themes.

The Major League Baseball Players Association Essay Example for Free
The Major League Baseball Players Association Essay The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) is the union of professional baseball players in the major league. The Association plays the role of collective bargaining for all major league players and it is also the representative for players that need salary arbitration. Like any other union, MLBPA defends the rights of its members and functions in order to protect the playersââ¬â¢ best interest. One of the attributions of the MLBPA is that of making sure that the conditions for playing are in accordance with the Associationââ¬â¢s safety guidelines. A union of professional baseball players was necessary for promoting the interests of the players and so unions acting in the benefit of professional players were created almost from the very beginning of the history of baseball as a sport. MLBPA does not represent the first union of baseball players, as previous attempts included the Brotherhood of Professional Baseball Players (founded in 1885), Players Protective Association (1900), Fraternity of Professional Baseball Players of America (1912), or American Baseball Guild (1946) (Major League Baseball Players Association, 2007). The basis of MLBPA was set by the formation of the American Baseball Guild which was created by labor lawyer Robert Murphy (Haupert, 2003). The major change that was the outcome of the Guild was that the standard labor contract of players was changed in the benefit of the players since before this change the contracts were very much dictated by owners (Haupert, 2003). Although the Guild was unsuccessful in forming a union, it did bring a great deal of change in the way playersââ¬â¢ contracts and rights were being handled. MLBPA is currently the baseball playersââ¬â¢ organization and the outcome of this association is the result of the changes that took place in the unionization of baseball players. The union was formed in 1954, but it ââ¬Å"remained in the background until the players hired Marvin Miller in 1966 to head the organizationâ⬠(Haupert, 2003). This was the decisive step in the future of the union of baseball players. Miller was a former negotiator for the US steel workers and this experience was used with success in the interest of baseball players (Haupert, 2003). The leadership of Marvin Miller and his influence was very usefull for the interest of MLBPA. His skills turned out to exceed those of the owners as he managed to change the rules of the game and represent the players in gaining what was theirs. He managed to control the power that owners had on the players and trough his tough practices to make the opinion of players matter in matters of trade and such (Rockford). Millerââ¬â¢s leadership had a great impact on the unionization of baseball players as his lead brought the most important changes in the life of professional baseball players. Marvin Miller retired in 1984 after managing to put an end to the reserve clause, to ensure the right of free movement from team to team, to gain a great raise in the salary of baseball players (Rockford). Other important changes that were conducted and influenced by Millerââ¬â¢s organizational skills referred to a greater implication of the union in labor disputes, to the creation of a pension fund sponsored mainly from percentages of television revenue. But the most important accomplishment of Millerââ¬â¢s leadership was that the union was recognized and also the right of players to be represented in negotiations by a collective organization was also recognized (Rockford). Marvin Miller is responsible for making baseball a business profitable both for owners and players. The current leader of MLBPA, Don Fehr, was hired by Miller in 1977 as general counsel and after the retirement of Miller he was chosen by the players to represent them as executive director of MLBPA (Haupert, 2003). Fehrââ¬â¢s influence was noticeable for following the policies of his predecessor, continuing the road chosen by Miller. Fehrââ¬â¢s accomplishments are shown in his role of negotiator in collective bargaining with major league owners and in ââ¬Å"administering contracts, grievance arbitration, and pension and health care mattersâ⬠(Schwarz, 2003). His mission leading the union was even harder that expected because he was replacing a legend, the man that built the union and that had lead it successfully for such a long time. Even so, Fehr was successful in leading the union and in defending the interest of the players. ââ¬Å"The average salary of a major leaguer has gone from $ 185,000 in 1981 to $2. 47 million in 2005. â⬠(Cooper, 2006) MLBPA managed to use the changes made by former unions or associations of professional baseball players and managed to become today the strongest sports union around. Under the leadership of only two, but strong leaders, MLBPA has progressed greatly and this progress is first of all attributed to the leaders that had always had a coherent policy and strong faith in their mission. Perhaps the key to the success of MLBPA is that its leaders have always tried to maintain a unity among the players and by keeping them together and focused on a common goal, they could accomplish the major growth in the baseball industry. Those Who Can, Teach Essay -- Education, Ryan Cooper
In chapter two of Ryan Cooperââ¬â¢s textbook, Those Who Can, Teach, he lists eight characteristics of an effective school: ââ¬Å"[1] high expectations for student performance, [2] communication among teachers, [3] a task orientation among the staff, [4] the ability to keep students on task, [5] the expenditure of little time on behavior management, [6] the principalââ¬â¢s instructional leadership, [7] the participation of parents, and [8] the school environmentâ⬠(51). While all eight characteristics above greatly contribute to a schoolââ¬â¢s overall success, some characteristics have a greater ability to affect the success of a given school. Educators Wong and Wong point out that research consistently says effective teachers exhibit three characteristics: 1) they are good classroom managers, 2) they teach for learning and mastery, and 3) they have positive expectations (8-10). Because I believe the foundation of school effectiveness relies on teachers, I consider the characteristics with a focus on effective teacher-to-student interaction most important. Taken from the list above, those characteristics are (1) teachers who exhibit high expectations for student performance, (3) a task orientation among the teaching staff, and (4) the ability to keep students on task. A teacherââ¬â¢s effect on students is significant because teachers have greater influence on student achievement than a school. Robert Marzanoââ¬â¢s study separating a schoolââ¬â¢s effect on student achievement from a teacherââ¬â¢s effect on student achievement supports this notion. Marzano found that an ineffective teacher in an effective school environment has little to no effect on student achievement. To the contrary, an effective teacher in an ineffective school environment was found to have a ... ...aff, such as paraprofessionals, counselors, librarians, specialists, and even janitors, comes to know and care about the strengths and weaknesses of students as much as teachers and administrators. More importantly, they help to provide solutions to overcoming low student achievement. A motivated support staff also contributes to the overall success of a school. In summary, I believe an effective teacher has the most influence on an effective school. Because of this, I consider Cooperââ¬â¢s characteristics centered on effective teaching as most important. I do also believe that fostering effective teaching skills through effective professional development programs are essential to creating an effective school. Furthermore, I would not discount the roles of non-teachers in the school setting, as they contribute to a schoolââ¬â¢s overall effectiveness too.

Effects of Drinking Alcohol Essay
Drinking alcohol is like taking a drug. It is a form of drug abuse, and drug addiction. This is a worldwide problem that many people are involved in. There are good effects of alcohol if it is in small amounts, and in moderation. On the other hand there are bad short and long term effects. The effects that a person will get are all based on certain factors like, how much and how often alcohol is consumed, the age of the person, when the person started and how long they have been drinking for, gender, their family history and last but not least based on their health. Lately scientists have been saying that a little bit of alcohol with dinner is not only okay but it is also good for you. This is true in moderation. They say that if you drink a small amount of alcohol it will help you sleep. Also if you drink a moderate amount every day it can help your health in the long run. A moderate amount is considered to be 1 drink for women daily and 2 drinks for men daily. This can help bring your HDL level up, which helps protect your heart against disease that causes heart attacks. Also a moderate amount of alcohol everyday can lower your risk of developing diabetes by increasing your insulin sensitivity. It can also raise ââ¬Ëgood cholesterolââ¬â¢ levels. In the long run they have said that for women it helps keep the mind sharp in later years. Now when they talk about having a helpful amount of alcohol they mean small doses of it a day with a meal, so that the absorption rate is slowed down. Now this doesnââ¬â¢t mean that a person should start drinking for the benefits that it gives, it just means that if you drink in moderation already it could be slightly helpful to you in the future. If you take advantage of that and drink in excess there are effects that you should be aware of. Contrary to some beliefs, alcohol is a depressant. This is the opposite of a stimulator, meaning that it calms you down, and slows down some organs in your body. Alcohol therefore has short term effects on your body. With about 0. 05% blood- alcohol level you start to get dulled judgment and your inhibitions are released. After that stage you start to get clumsy and will have slurred speech with about a 0. 10% blood-alcohol level. Once you come close to unconsciousness you have a 0. 30% blood-alcohol level. After that point it starts to get dangerous, because you can go into a coma at 0. 45%, and then at 0. 70% the brain starts to shut off and stop controlling things like breathing, and your heart, which will end up in death. These facts are not meant to scare you, because most people canââ¬â¢t drink past 0. 40% because they are asleep. Some other short term effects include blackouts, where you canââ¬â¢t remember what happened, and insomnia, where you canââ¬â¢t fall asleep. While you are drinking you will be less alert, less aware of your surroundings, lose your muscular coordination, have difficulty walking, have blurred vision, and have slow reaction times. This can lead to accidents, injuries, and death. Also after drinking you may get a hangover the next morning which will include effects like headaches, nausea, thirst, heartburn, dizziness, and fatigue. If you are not careful with the amount of alcohol that you drink you can get some bad side-effects. Once you start to become addicted to alcohol you are considered an alcoholic. There are many long term effects that come along with drinking lots of alcohol for a prolonged amount of time. Drinking alcohol like this will damage your organs, like the brain, liver, stomach, intestines, and heart. The brain is affected, because brain cells die which leads to memory loss, confusion, learning difficulties, problems with attention, and brain disorders. The liver is effected, because cancer can develop there, and also in the mouth and throat. The stomach may acquire ulcers. From prolonged drinking you can have a stroke, or have heart failure. The nervous system can also get damaged, and when this happens the person will get physical and behavioral problems. Impaired vision can also be a result of this type of drinking. It also affects your health. One reason for this is because alcohol is high in calories which can lead to obesity. Another reason is that poor nutrition normally comes side by side with lots of drinking. This could be because the alcohol interferes with the absorption and storage of the vitamins you get. Also the water soluble minerals get lost because of the increased urination that happens. Because of the lowered health you also have a lowered resistance to infections. Some other less serious effects of prolonged drinking are vomiting, profuse sweating, hallucinations, tremors, and sleep disturbances. All of these problems can quickly lead to injury to oneself or to others, violence, and death. Also it leads to a loss of employment, and a loss of family life. If you are addicted to alcohol or drink a lot of alcohol for a long period of time you will shorten your life span by about 12 years, and get a lot of serious side-effects. In conclusion alcohol can affect your life in a good or bad way depending on how you drink, how often you drink, and how much you drink. It is better to drink in moderation, and responsibly. This normally means drinking only 1 to 2 glasses a day with a meal, and to also have a healthy diet that goes along with that. Otherwise the health benefits of drinking alcohol are gone, and replaced with some horrible side-effects. Everyone can make their own decision on what drinking in moderation is and what drinking responsibly means, but everyone should be informed with the facts.

Samuel Adams
Samuel Adams: An American View of the Stamp Act Samuel Adams writes a letter to his English friend, John Smith, defending the Americanââ¬â¢s side of the new imperial taxation and control. He describes the colonists thinking of the act as ââ¬Å"both burdensome and unconstitutional. â⬠They feel as if they are not represented as they should be and that their rights as Englishmen are being taken away from them. He goes on to say that Parliament cannot tax them consistent with the constitution because they are not represented. In 1765 England passed a new law called the Stamp Act.This act was meant to replace the sugar act because that act did not work. It taxed all printed items. England felt that they needed to tax the colonies because the colonies were still a part of England and felt that they needed to help pay for the debt that they were in for the war that they had helped fight for the colonies. Benjamin Franklin proposed that if England was to tax the colonies, then they wanted members in the legislature so they could be one people. However, politicians rejected this idea and called Franklin a radical.England felt like the colonies were already represented enough because they had virtual representation and didnââ¬â¢t need to have geographic representation. England said that geographic representation would cost them too much time and hardly any laws would be passed. In this letter Adams says England is increasing their power and wealth at the colonies expense. He argues against the point that England makes saying that the war was to defend the colonies, saying that England didnââ¬â¢t do it for the colonies, but more for advancing their dominion and glory.Samuel Adams had a bias towards the American side. Originally the audience was his friend John Smith. However, since this letter has been published it is more aimed towards the English because it is refuting their side of the Stamp Act and how they thought of it. Samuel Adams is trying to get his point across that he and the rest of America feel under represented. I think that the meaning of this document is to let people know that there is just more than one side to the different acts that England was passing. There was an English side as well as an American side. The point was to show us the different views of each side, and help us realize that it was more of a misunderstanding rather than England wanting to take all control, and America wanting to break away from England. I think that one of the biggest misconceptions most people get from these different acts that eventually led to the revolution, was that America wanted to separate from England. However, this wasnââ¬â¢t the case. America actually wanted to stay a part of the English Empire.America and England just could never see eye to eye, for example how each of them saw Americaââ¬â¢s representation. This letter helped me better understand why this all these small acts eventually led up to the American revol ution. It made me realize that a lot of history is bias. Usually people only hear or read about one side of things and donââ¬â¢t really think about listening to the other side. To really understand history and better understand why something happened the way it did, itââ¬â¢s better to study each side of it.

Starbucks Global Strategy Essays
Starbucks Global Strategy Essays Starbucks Global Strategy Paper Starbucks Global Strategy Paper Sales have also seen a tentative turnaround and the coffee chain plans to open 50-60 more stores in the country this year. The challenge in the Japanese market has been keeping consumers loyal to the Struck brand which can cost three times as much as its competitors. To counter this problem, Struck Japan launched promotions such as offering customers a second cup of coffee for 100 yen if they purchase a coffee beverage earlier the same day. This strategy was so successful that the company extended the deal. Struck has also worked over the years to customize its menu to cater to local tastes and bring costs down by procuring more ingredients locally. They have worked to revive recipes, focusing on items that would please the Japanese palate. The next challenge for Struck in Japan and In Asia, say analysts, Is fine-tuning racketing in a region populated by young people who are technically savvy. Mr.. Schultz said the company will continue to grow In the Japanese market, by adopting new store formats, such as drive-thorough, and Introducing new products, such as Its Via instant coffee. He states that We are still at the embryonic stages of what Salsa will be for the company. (Chants 2010). According to Struck. Com, Struck Coffee International Is built on great global partnerships. Struck Chief Executive Officer, Howard Schultz, summed It up nicely when he said, We main highly respectful of the culture and tradition of the countries In which we do business. In Struck search for new areas of growth following a deep retrenchment In ten . In ten past year (Sancta, z teen nave turned t focus on increasing their presence in China. Although Japan currently has the most international Struck locations, Howard Schultz plans to open thousands of stores in China over time (Chants, 2010) and overtake Japan as its largest market outside of North America. Schultz understands the sensitivity associated with his plans to expand in China and has made the commitment to take the necessary time ND expend the necessary money to research, study and acclimate to the Chinese market. Struck goal to grow from 376 stores on the China mainland (Chants, 2010) to thousands of stores is a business risk that will be determined by their success at understanding and respecting Chinas political system, embracing the social norms of Chinese society and capturing the segment of the Chinese market that are or will become loyal Struck consumers. If Schultz and his team take the suggestions of industry analysts, they will use customized advertising to target the young, computer savvy Chinese professionals and students. This group could also be identified as the up and coming middle class market that needs a venue to display their upward rise. With a customized advertising strategy, Struck will also customize their deliverables. Products will be modified to suit the tastes of their target market and the Coffee Shops atmospheres will be designed to appeal to the aforementioned up and coming middle class. The issue of local differentiation will not only be handled through inducing atmospheres and product modification, but the local economy will be stimulated by Struck plan to purchase food items from local vendors. Local procurement will help defray the cost of product modification, provide more accessibility to specialized ingredients, and build upon Struck commitment to global partnerships. The key success factors to the strategy Schultz has outlined for China are knowledge of the political system, research, product modification and customized marketing and advertising. Schultz has already admitted that the complexity of the Chinese market will require significant discipline and thoughtfulness. (Chants 2010) Therefore, he is resigned to increasing the odds of long-term success by making strategic, carefully-designed decisions. Chinas constantly evolving political system does indeed present a challenge for Struck and may be one of the primary reasons they have not considered this level of expansion before, but Schultz and his Global Development Team are devoted to putting the right people in place to help the company stay abreast of and compliant with the political changes and political climate. After careful research, Struck RD Department will develop a locally accepted deviation of a Struck standardized menu. But, the primary key to the success of Schultz plan will be the success of his marketing and advertising department. If they are able to identify, reach, touch and persuade the up and coming Chinese professionals and students to buy Struck coffee and sit in [Struck] stores, (Chants 2010) Schultz plan will undoubtedly be classified a model for success. Due to the global economic crisis most Americans were cutting back on daily spending and luxury items which negatively affected the companys revenue and profit. Years of overextension had finally caught up with the coffee giant; a new strategy was needed to save the company. CEO, James L. Donald was let go and Howard Schultz was brought in to urn the sinking company around. Layoffs and store closings allowed the company to snare nearly expand in China stemmed from these significant cutbacks in the U. S. That left the coffee company in search for new growth opportunities. From an internal point of view, their misfortune proved to be an opportunity. This opportunity came at a time that allowed Struck to develop true growth using internal resources to expand profits domestically. The key was to see growth in sales without resorting to opening new stores in the U. S. This was done by focusing on customer service and developing ewe products such as TAG Tea, Via Ready Brew, and the Struck Reward Program. In January 2010, Struck reported its first quarter of same-store sales growth since the end of 2008 (Chants, 2010). With the worst behind them and U. S. Sales rebuilding, Struck is now in a place to move forward with expansion overseas. From an external point of view, China represents the most significant growth opportunity (Chants, 2010). China is one of the few economies that remained strong through the worst of the global financial crisis. This provides opportunity for Struck to establish a place in the China markets if integrated properly. Breaking into Chinas competitive market will be difficult and extensive planning needs to take place before any expansion happens. The foundation of Struck strategy should involve research of the Chinese culture so they can grasp an understanding of their taste and preference. Most Chinese do not have an appetite for coffee, as a whole China is known for its hot tea. They will not be impressed with caramel Franciscans and mocha lattes. To attract local followers, instead of foreign tourist, Struck needs to look into developing new tea and pastry recipes that use Chinese ingredients and products. Keep the Struck branding but develop a new line of products specific to China/Asia that can be added to China store menus. Moreover, Struck needs to continue to develop ways to compete with lowered priced rivals such as McDonalds and local mom and pop coffee shops. Struck currently offers $2 afternoon coffee when a customer purchases a full priced coffee prior to eleven a. M. In the same day (with receipt only). This is a great sales tactic that needs to be followed with weekly specials and promotions such as a flavor of the week for half price. Furthermore, Struck needs to reinforce the basics good customer service, quick production during peak hours, and the unique flavors that helped set them apart from competitors and make paying a little extra worthwhile. All businesses, regardless of the industry, must be prepared to adapt to their external environment in order to be successful in implementing global operating strategies. The external environment consists of competitors; the economic, political/ legal, and social systems; monetary systems; and the environmental systems of the host country. The strategic global plan of Inboard, a leading North American manufacturer of engineered wood products, is to become the supplier of choice while strengthening their role within the North American engineered wood product industry. Inboard products are currently sold to retailers, distributors, and finished goods manufacturers for the production of kitchen cabinetry, furniture, and floor covering. Inboards parent company, Pilferer Group, is a leading worldwide nutcracker AT engineered wood products, surface Talents products Ana laminate flooring. The company has approximately 6,000 employees and operates 22 plants in North America and Western and Eastern Europe. The company delivers its products to customers in over 80 countries. Comparable to Struck, Pilferer too strives to increase its international market position. The company focuses on a few primary objectives that include focusing on the engineered wood segment of the market, diversification of the companys portfolio by focusing on both products and the regions in which those products are made available, and cost reduction leadership. Similarly to Struck, Inboard has had to distinguish itself from its competitors. During the economic downturn in the housing and construction markets, it became ITIL for Inboard to provide a better value to their customers. At their newly acquired location in Monocle, NC, Inboard has established a mega-site which allows customers to purchase up to four different product lines from the same location. No other competitor in the industry has these same capabilities. This one stop shopping center provides Inboard customers with convenience and transportation cost reduction incentives that set it apart from other wood manufacturers. Over the past two years, the global economic recession has drastically slowed the growth in the engineered wood product industry. Many of Inboards competitors have been unable to withstand the instability and have idled facilities in an effort to control costs. Instead, Inboard has taken advantage of the slowed economy. By building a new medium density fiber board plant in the United States, Inboard has prepared for future market expansion. This new plant provides Inboard with the necessary capacity and increased product lines required to attract new customers as the economy begins to gain momentum and grow. In addition, the location of the new MAD plant in North Carolina provides Inboard with convenient access to revive the entire east coast and also allows them to take advantage of cheaper transportation and raw material costs. Struck, like Inboard, recognizes that carefully planned and calculated effort must be taken today to ensure future growth. Adjusting to the social system within the United States has been a relatively smooth transition when compared to some of the more complex social issues faced by Struck within the Chinese market place. However, one crucial issue facing Inboard is the language barrier between employees located in the United States and those employees who work at the corporate office in Lava, Canada. Lava, which is located in the Quebec/Montreal region, is a French speaking province. To further complicate issues, Pilferer, Inboards parent company, is located in Germany. Communication between the different parties can become strained as the meaning and understanding of issues can be lost during translation. The monetary system also presents real challenges for international companies. Both Inboard Canada and Inboard USA must deal with foreign exchange loss or gain on transactions that are generated between the two business units, as well as direct transactions with Pilferer GAG. In addition, Inboards SAP accounting system ad to be customized in order to be able to issue payments and receipts in multiple currencies Including ten u. S. Collar, Canaan dollar, Ana ten Euro. Political and legal issues have added an additional level of complexity for both Inboard and Struck. In an effort to further understand the political and legal issues within China, Struck has progressed cautiously. By expanding slowly and deliberately, Struck hopes to avoid making any costly mistakes that could ultimately lead to failure. One legal issue that was overlooked by Inboard when they purchased the site in Monocle, NC was sales and use tax application. Developing a knowledge base and understanding of sales and use tax law was a challenge for Inboards Canadian headquarters since this issue is unique to the United States and not applicable in Canada or Germany. Different tax rates are applied based upon the material being purchased and the role that the material has within the production process. Given that the SAP accounting system was not customized in order to process these taxes, a manual process had to be developed and implemented in order to stay within compliance of both state and federal laws. In recent years, increased environmental isolations have led to the development of new greener products that contain less formaldehyde and other chemical toxins. Customers have begun to demand more earth friendly products and government regulators have established guidelines and policies that must be adhered to in order to avoid fines and penalties. Struck has long been a leader in the environmental arena. By encouraging recycling and using only cups and packaging items that have been produced with recycled materials, Struck understands the importance of being environmentally friendly and has chosen to lead by example. The Struck initiative to branch into the Chinese arrest is one that is becoming more and more popular with countries both domestic and foreign. Countries continue to tap into this lucrative market for financial wealth and building capital. But what about companies that expanded in China long ago? Perhaps these companies have a solid establishment that they must evaluate their corporate strategy to maintain their Chinese presence? One such example of this scenario is Siemens. The company is based in Germany, with a global presence across the world. It has a sound corporate strategy that currently centers around innovation, sustainability and surviving the economic untrue. It operates in 3 different sectors: Industry, Energy and the focus of our international application, Healthcare. We will analyze Siemens reach across the globe in one of the biggest growing industries today. The strategic business unit of Siemens Medical Solutions prides its success on being a global leader in innovation. But this business unit must also consider its external business environment to maintain its successful brand. Earlier this year, the healthcare bill was a huge political factor in the healthcare industry. Hospitals across the country were reluctant to make equipment purchases based on whether he bill would pass or fail. As Siemens realized this political influence they began to look even close at its economic external environment. Siemens began to see the sale of its products decline, Just like competitors GE and Philips. So rather than persuade higher sales of new equipment, it focused on its current customers through impeccable service to keep them happy and satisfied amidst the uncertainty and economic downturn. The company incorporated internal campaigns directly around tons Idea tongue a O rests Like last call 1 u standards AT Excellence Ana a recently launched Think. Feel. Do. Campaign to encourage all employees to take a vested interest in servicing the end customer. Operating in the healthcare industry makes Siemens Medical an easy target from a legal perspective. The FDA must regulate and ensure each piece of medical imaging equipment and its operators meet standards suitable for patient use. Equipment malfunctions or misuse could lead to injury or even death. A recent example is the radiation overdose incidents that were reported last year. The overdoses went undetected for over a year. Although the argument can be made that the overdose is a result of operator error, the FDA is still investigating any many involvement and lawsuits continue to abound the equipment companies. The business world has evolved so much so that a global presence is necessary to expand for large companies such as Siemens. The functional strategy of the marketing and sales teams has to be well versed when it comes to interacting with different cultures from a social/cultural perspective. A common discrepancy we find in day-to-day business between US and German culture is the personal vacation time spent away from work. The typical length off German vacation is 4-6 weeks, whereas an American vacation if only 1 week. German maternity leave is roughly one year for others (with full benefits and pay the majority of the leave), where as American maternity leave is a maximum 8 weeks with only a percentage of pay. Siemens is a 160 year-plus powerhouse in Europe and has a major international presence. It has survived war, bad economies, and a host of other tumultuous events. It has learned to assess each business environment based on the cultural differences each possesses. Europe is officially branded as home to the Siemens trademark. Although the cost of living may be higher here than other industrialized nations, its healthcare is top notch due to the fact that Europeans do not pay out-of- octet to see a doctor or go to the emergency room. Including the costs in taxes ensures people take advantage of preventative care and keep costs low and will continue to keep its challenges minimal and its operational risks low. China is a vast changing environment that is trying to change how it disperses care to its vast population. Treating over 1 billion people is by far its greatest operational risk. China undertook a huge healthcare reform of its own to provide such adequate healthcare to its people. The challenge to shift governmental aid towards free market enterprise will also be addressed in this transition. A major component in making this move successful is expanding medical imaging access within the hospitals. Siemens has already established its brand in the country, but it must sharpen its global strategy to compete with local, yet much smaller competitors that may have a better chance at winning contracts because of their native ties. Siemens extensive reach within the United States surpasses any other country in the world. United States possesses over half of the companys healthcare market share. The brands innovation is perhaps its core competency and primary characteristic to compete with American powerhouse GE. Healthcare professionals cannot deny the companys product capability and performance. Amidst so many order winners, and its success in America, there are also challenges and risks the company cannot deny. The current state of the economy has shifted the way Americans think so much so, Tanat ten preference Is to Duty American, not Torrent. It Is up to Siemens to provoke our country with the trust and investment we desire to keep our status known. That means extending opportunities to American suppliers, American decision-making within the company, and expanding Jobs to keep the American economy thriving

National Emergency Definition, Powers and Examples
National Emergency Definition, Powers and Examples In United States government, a national emergency is any extraordinary situation deemed by the President of the United States to threaten the health or safety of the citizens and which cannot be adequately addressed by the application of other laws or executive actions. Exactly what situations do or do not constitute a state of emergency came into question in early 2019, when President Donald Trump declared a national emergency in order to divert existing Department of Defense funds for the completion of a concrete wall (or steel barrier) intended to prevent illegal immigration along the entire southern U.S. border- a maneuver used by President Ronald Reagan in 1982 to boost construction of military facilities. Key Takeaways A national emergency is any extraordinary situation declared by the president as threatening American citizens and not resolvable by other laws.Under the National Emergencies Act of 1976, a declaration of national emergency temporarily grants the president at least 140 special powers. The reasons for declaring a national emergency and the provisions to be applied during that emergency are solely and entirely up to the president. Under the National Emergencies Act (NEA), more than 100 special powers are granted to the president under a declared national emergency. When and why to declare a national emergency is entirely at the presidentââ¬â¢s discretion. Background and Legal Precedence While the U.S. Constitution grants Congress a few limited emergency powers- such as the power to suspend the right to writs of habeas corpus- it grants the president no such emergency powers. However, many legal scholars have confirmed that the Constitution gives presidents implied emergency powers by making them the commander in chief of the armed forces and by granting them broad, largely undefined ââ¬Å"executive power.â⬠Many such executive powers are applied by presidents through the issuance of legally-binding executive orders and proclamations. The first such emergency proclamation was issued by President Woodrow Wilson on February 5, 1917, in response to a lack of U.S. cargo ships needed to carry exported products to allied nations during World War I. The provisions of the proclamation were declared to be within the framework of the earlier law creating the United States Shipping Board. Prior to the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, presidents declared numerous emergencies to deal with situations like the hoarding of gold, the Korean War, a postal workers strike, and out-of-control economic inflation. In 1933, Roosevelt, in response to the Great Depression, began the ongoing trend of presidents declaring national emergencies of unlimited scope and duration, and without congressional oversight or precedent in existing laws. Eventually, in 1976, Congress passed the National Emergencies Act, which was intended to limit the scope and number of executive emergency powers a president could invoke by declaring an ââ¬Å"emergencyâ⬠and to provide certain checks and balances on the emergency powers of the president. National Emergencies Act of 1976 Under the National Emergencies Act, presidents are required to identify the specific powers and provisions to be activated by the declaration of emergency and to renew the declaration annually. While the law grants the president at least 136 distinct emergency powers, only 13 of them require a separate declaration by Congress. During declared national emergencies, the president can- without the approval of Congress- freeze the bank accounts of Americans, shut down most types of electronic communications inside the United States, and ground all non-military aircraft. Procedure for Declaring Emergencies Under the National Emergencies Act, presidents activate their emergency powers by issuing a public declaration of national emergency. The declaration must specifically list and notify Congress of the powers to be utilized during the duration of the emergency. Presidents may terminate declared emergencies at any time or continue to renew them annually with the approval of Congress. Since 1985, Congress has been allowed to renew an emergency declaration by the passage of a joint resolution rather than by separate resolutions passed by the House and Senate. The law also requires the president and the Cabinet-level executive agencies to keep records of all executive orders and regulations issued due to the emergency and to regularly report to Congress the costs of enforcing those provisions. Emergency Powers Under the National Emergencies Act Among the nearly 140 national emergency powers Congress has delegated to the president, some are particularly dramatic. In 1969, President Nixon suspended all laws regulating chemical and biological weapons on humans. In 1977, President Ford allowed states to suspend key provisions of the Clean Air Act. And in 1982, President Reagan authorized the use of existing Defense Department funds for emergency military construction. More recently, President George W. Bush declared a national emergency days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that suspended several laws, including all laws limiting the size of the military. In 2009, President Obama declared a national emergency to help hospitals and local governments deal with the swine flu outbreak. Notable Ongoing National Emergencies As of January 2019, a total of 32 national emergencies dating back to 1979 remained in effect. A few of the more notable of these include: To combat the flow of drugs, criminals and illegal immigrants coming across the U.S. border with Mexico. (Feb. 2019)Preventing the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (Nov.1994)Banning financial dealings with terrorists who threaten the Middle East peace process (Jan. 1995)Provisions arising from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (Sept. 2001)Freezing the funds and property of persons who commit, threaten to commit, or support terrorism (Sept. 2001)Continuing restrictions with respect to North Korea and North Korean nationals (June 2008)Freezing the property of multinational organized criminal organizations (July 2011)Freezing the property of certain persons involved in cyber-enabled crime (April 2015) During his first two years in office (2017 and 2018), President Trump issued three national emergency declarations, most notably, a controversial national emergency intended to punish foreign nationals found to have interfered in or otherwise attempted to influence American elections. Accused of collusion with Russian agents during the 2016 presidential election, Trumpââ¬â¢s declaration drew bipartisan criticism for being too weak. All three national emergency declarations issued by President Trump as of January 2019 include: Blocking access to the property of persons involved in serious human rights abuse or corruption (Dec. 2017)Imposing sanctions in the event of foreign interference in a United States election (Sept. 2018)Blocking access to the property of persons contributing to the situation in Nicaragua (Nov. 2018) While most national emergencies have been declared in response to foreign affairs, no law prevents presidents from declaring them to deal with a domestic issue, as President Obama did in 2009 to deal with the swine flu. Two other laws- the Stafford Act and the Public Health Services Act- are intended to provide federalà government response to state and local disasters, and public health emergencies. In addition, all 50 states have laws empowering the governors to declare emergencies within their states and to ask the President of the United States for federal assistance. President Trumpââ¬â¢s 2019 Border Wall Emergency On January 8, 2019, President Trump, in the midst of what would become the longest government shutdown in history, threatened to declare a national emergency in order to bypass Congress by diverting some $5.7 billion in existing funds to the construction of an additional 234 miles of Mexican border security wall. The declaration was put on hold when on January 25, an agreement was reached between the White House and congressional Democrats allowing the government to reopen until February 15. The agreement was based on the understanding that negotiations over border wall funding would proceed during the three-week delay. However, after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on January 31 flatly stated that ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s not going to be any wall money in the [compromise] legislation,â⬠President Trump stated that there was a ââ¬Å"good chanceâ⬠that he would, indeed, declare a national emergency to secure the funding. ââ¬Å"We are doing it regardless,â⬠he told reporters on February 1, suggesting that more details might come in his shutdown-delayed State of the Union address scheduled for February 5. On February 15, he declared a national emergency, which is expected to face legal challenges. On February 15, 2019, President Trump signed a compromise Homeland Security spending bill that provided $1.375 billion for 55 miles of new fencing- but not a solid wall- along the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. While the bill averted a second government shutdown, it fell far short of providing the $5.7 billion Trump had sought for the addition of 234 miles of solid steel walls. At the same time, President Trump declared a national emergency he said would allow him to redirect $3.5 billion from the Defense Departmentââ¬â¢s military construction budget to the construction of additinal border wall. He also signed executive orders redirecting $600 million from the Treasury Departments drug forfeiture fund, and $2.5 billion from the Defense Departmentââ¬â¢s drug interdiction program for the same purpose. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re going to confront the national security crisis on our southern border and weââ¬â¢re going to do it one way or the other,â⬠President Trump said. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s an invasion,â⬠he added. ââ¬Å"We have an invasion of drugs and criminals coming into our country.â⬠Democratic leaders immediately challenged Trumpââ¬â¢s constitutional authority to use presidential national emergency powers to regulate immigration. VETO! On February 26, 2019, the House of Representatives voted 245-182 to approve a joint resolution canceling President Trumpââ¬â¢s national emergency declaration. On March 14, the Senate voted 59-41 (including the votes of 12 Republicans) to concur, sending the measure to the presidentââ¬â¢s desk. Moments after the vote, Trump tweeted a one-word response, ââ¬Å"VETO!â⬠In a follow-up tweet, the president added, ââ¬Å"I look forward to VETOING the just passed Democrat inspired Resolution which would OPEN BORDERS while increasing Crime, Drugs, and Trafficking in our Country.â⬠On March 15, 2019, President Trump followed up his tweets by issuing his first presidential veto rejecting the resolution. ââ¬Å"Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it,â⬠he stated at the signing ceremony.à Sources and Further Reference Fisch, William B. ââ¬Å"Emergency in the Constitutional Law of the United States.â⬠University of Missouri School of Law (1990).ââ¬Å"National Emergency Definition.â⬠Duhaimeââ¬â¢s Law Dictionary. Lack of educational opportunities Speech or Presentation
Lack of educational opportunities - Speech or Presentation Example It is high time to seek for some effective solutions and recommendations that do away with this social inequality. One of the basic solutions to the problem of lack of educational opportunities is to adopt new policies and programs that help the backward sections of the society. Successful implementation of these policies by the government bodies is equally important, and the role of large-scale campaigns and public awareness programs should not be overlooked. As the non-conservative market-oriented public education system has exacerbated the widespread inequality of educational opportunities, ââ¬Å"the focus of public education should shift to the needs of low-income students. A need-oriented public education system can greatly benefit the poor without lowering quality of education for others.â⬠(Arrighi and Maume, 105) Therefore, a new system of public education opposing market-oriented public education system can ensure quality of education, real life opportunities, and equi table educational opportunities. It is essential to recognize that lack of educational opportunities result in violence, poverty, social injustice, crimes, and even anti-social activities.

Corporate Governance in Public Limited Companies in the UK Coursework
Corporate Governance in Public Limited Companies in the UK - Coursework Example The paper tells that in the past years, the increment in freedom has become eminent, in all aspects of business activities thereby creating more opportunities for entrepreneurs. There has been international market development, especially for UK based companies. Cross-borders business relationships have increased dramatically. The UK has also generated a lot of developments. The businesses have clearly indicated that they have the knowledge and the strength to explore new ventures abroad and also in the UK, and have thus helped increase the affluence. The business community wants to show that their enterprises are ready to shoulder this increased responsibly. Many business ventures have realized that by creating good relationships with the stakeholders, there would be more business opportunities that will come up. There should be mutual trust between a company and the public in order to have improved competitiveness and ultimately higher and better living standards of the people. Ensu ring that the business community is trustworthy can be done and achieved by improving relationships between the stakeholders, from the top management to the lowest shareholder. The corporate governance system in the UK has been very effective. Regulations that have been established have assisted enterprises in conducting relations between the stakeholders in companies. It was a firm belief among the UK business community that in order to obtain acceptable results, internal governance and supervision within the enterprises should be increased immensely. There was a lot at stake, and it was important that the initiative came from the business community itself and that it pointed out methods to alleviate the confidence of the stakeholders involved and that the public had the right to demand from enterprises.
